Dark side of Social Media

Social media login

560 million!! Yes 560 million internet users are there in India and without any doubt you are one of them.

Internet nowadays is something without which we cannot survive. It has become an integral part of our day to day life. We can neglect the water bill but not the broadband bill. Although there are many things to do with internet but the most widely used application is in the social media field.  Now another question arises, what is social media?  And I very well know it is an absurd question. You must be knowing the answer to the question better than me. If we talk about the facebook only there are 313.6 million users in India, more than the population of Australia, Pakistan and UK combined. And we very well know about WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat etc. There is nothing that is kept out of sight about these social media sites.

People are using these media to their fullest potential. Either it be communication between people, advertising your product or your organisation, letting people know about latest adventures or events in life or initiating any campaign. These sites are used to their fullest. If it is so, then why this WHERE ARE WE WRONG. What’s wrong in using anything to its full potential? Yes it’s correct to use these for good, but everything has their own dark side and something called CYBERBULLYING is the darker side of this good media. As the name suggests, cyberbullying is bullying any other individual through means of these social networking sites. Mean messages, harsh comments, and spreading rumours etc all this comes under the heinous act of cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying or sometimes referred as cyberharassment is becoming very common among teens. In the current scenario having more followers or friends, good number of likes on your pictures is all which is necessary for a reputed image in the peer group. Yes you accept it or not things are like this. I will not be throwing any light towards the factual side of this problem but I will be expressing my views on the emotional part of this epidemic. Yes it is an epidemic. One out of four people using these sites is a victim of this epidemic. So, let us emphasize on what is actually happening in the current modern world. Take an example. There is a class having number of students. There are few students or you say friends who are very much active on social media sites and therefore have number of friends and followers on the same. Even if they show off or they don’t its human tendency to develop a feeling of jealousy. So as a result, other students who were not that much active or do not have good number of followers feel low and jealous of others. Now either they work hard to get good number of likes, friends and followers or they will try to bring the other down. And we very well know what’s easy. So they try to spread rumours, provoke people against them, comment something very bad about them in public and use other means harassment. Another very common case of cyberharassment is of “love”. Yes, a boy likes a girl, he expresses his feelings but the girl rejects. Taking this as an insult he tries to harass that girl by sending mean messages on messenger, public character assassination, spreading rumours and what not. And I’m not being specific but there are few cases reported against females.

What’s the impact of this??

Yes there are arguments given by the pathogens that they did this to take revenge. Revenge, are you serious? You destroyed or almost destroyed the social life of that person for your small revenge. A victim, in maximum number of cases, goes into depression, cuts him/her from the society. And if not taken care of this situation ultimately leads to fatal results.

So it’s a simple logic that if social media “is a tool to build your reputation” then yes it can be a weapon “to destroy your reputation too”.

  5. Simply stated, the pound sign or hashtag is visually represented by the symbol '#', and by placing the symbol in front of a word (or series of words) on a social network, it will turn that word into a metadata tag. In simple English, the '#' symbol turns the word(s) immediately following it into a searchable term that can be used on that website or social network, which is activated by someone clicking on that hashtag. 먹튀해시태그
